Top Alaska Hikes: Experience God in the Frontier

Our passengers love God-focused Christian cruises to Alaska. To truly immerse yourself in the Alaskan wilderness, you must step off the ship from time to time. One of the best ways to experience God in the frontier is by traveling deeper into Alaska’s renowned landscape. Here are three of our favorite top Alaska hikes to put on your experience list during your next cruise to the 49th state. 

Mount Roberts Trail (Juneau)

Juneau, the state’s capital, is one of our favorite Alaska cruise ports. There are countless activities to enjoy and passengers fill their time here experiencing the many natural wonders of the frontier. With more than 250 miles of hiking trails to choose from, hiking is a popular activity for visitors. It’s the perfect way to see more of Juneau and connect with God.

The Mount Roberts Trail is about a mile-long journey from the cruise terminal to the trail start and a steady uphill climb from there. For a shorter hike, stop at the Mountain House which, during the summer, has a bathroom and water fill up station. At an elevation of 1,800 feet, breathtaking views of the Alaska panhandle are just steps away. From the mountain house you can continue hiking or take a ride on the Mount Roberts Tramway back down to the cruise terminal. 

For a faster, less strenuous downhill hike, ride the tram uphill first and walk back down. Regardless of what you choose, expect a lovely forest hike, plenty of wildflowers and amazing views.

Deer Mountain Trail (Ketchikan)

Ketchikan is known as the salmon fishing capital of the world. Hikers recognize this historic village as home to some of the most popular daytime hikes in the state. One of the best day hikes in all of Alaska is the Deer Mountain Trail. The trailhead is only a short 1.3 miles from the cruise terminal. (Be forewarned: It’s an uphill climb to get to the trailhead.) 

This hike is a full 5 miles from trailhead to summit and back and boasts a gain of 2,801 feet in elevation across plenty of switchbacks. It’s tough! But the panoramic views are worth every ounce of energy used. You’ll travel beneath the lush rainforest canopy and along alpine ridges with views that will leave you in breathless wonder over God’s magnificent creation.

Lower Reid Falls (Skagway)

A voyage to Lower Reid Falls is an ideal hike for those looking to experience Alaska’s stunning landscape. At four miles round trip and only a slight elevation gain from the cruise terminal, this trail is accessible and fun for hikers of all ages and skill levels. 

After disembarking, walk Main Street north across the S. Klondike Highway, then follow the gravel road behind the railroad yards until you reach Gold Rush Cemetery. It’s Skagway’s oldest cemetery and home to many of the famed characters of those days. Behind the cemetery, travel the short trail to Lower Reid Falls and enjoy the lush green forest and peaceful waterfalls around you.
