Get REAL ID: Is Your Identification Ready to Travel?

As we venture out into the world again, we are experiencing those flashes of wonder, delight and discovery that come from meaningful travel. We are once again stepping into God’s glorious creations to relax, reset and reconnect with Him and loved ones.  

We are thrilled to resume doing what we love, taking Christian travelers on exceptional travel experiences. In the past months, we may have gotten a little rusty on how to prepare and pack for our next getaway. There are toiletries and clothes, chargers and the always handy snack. Then, something new was added to the checklist for those planning to fly in the future––the REAL ID.

We’re unpacking the most frequently asked questions about the REAL ID for you. This is everything you need to know so you can keep embarking on God-filled adventures. 

What is a REAL ID?

The REAL ID is a driver’s license or identification card that serves as a federally accepted form of identification when boarding a domestic flight. The REAL ID is not an additional piece of documentation; it is a replacement for those we already have. Is my driver’s license REAL ID compliant?

There is a simple way to check if your current license is REAL ID compliant. Check the upper right-hand corner and look for a star. If you have one, your driver’s license is compliant. If not, you will need to apply for a REAL ID. The design of the stars varies from state to state but may look like one of the following:

If my license or ID is not compliant, how do I get a new one?

You can apply for a REAL ID at your local DMV. We recommend booking an appointment to skip the long lines. Before you go, visit your State Driver License Agency website for a list of the documents you need to bring to your appointment, such as:

1. Proof of identity, such as a valid passport or birth certificate
2. Proof of a social security number
3. Two different proofs of residence, such as utility bills, bank statements, etc. 

When does the REAL ID go into effect? 

The original federal deadline of October 2021 was pushed to May 3, 2023, due to the pandemic. You can visit the Homeland Security website for the most up-to-date information. 

While there is still time to apply, we encourage you not to wait. It’s nice to be prepared so you can say “yes” to your next exceptional travel experience without worrying about having the correct ID. Having your REAL ID leaves you free to plan for all the places you will explore!
