Above and Beyond: The Birth of the Israeli Air Force

Just a few years after the end of World War II, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War erupted in the Holy Land, eventually leading to the birth of the state of Israel. During this conflict, around 4,000 Jewish volunteers from around the world came to fight on the side of Israel. Known as machal (volunteers from abroad), many of these men were from the United States—and their passion, sacrifice, and bravery helped turn the tide of the war.

A new documentary called Above and Beyond: The Birth of the Israeli Air Force, in development by Playmount Productions, tells of the American fighter pilots who returned home from World War II with plans to resume their lives—only to leave them behind once again to fight for Israel. These pilots trained in secret, flew unproven aircraft...and changed the outcome of the war. In many ways, the state of Israel exists because of the sacrifices these men made.
